WVU Women take down No. 21 Iowa State
MORGANTOWN, WV—The West Virginia Mountaineer Women’s basketball team knocked off No. 21 Iowa State 73-60 Saturday night snapping a three game losing streak. The first quarter saw a battle between WVU’s sophomore guard JJ Quinerly and Iowa State’s senior guard Ashley Jones.
Jones had seven points and Quinerly eight.
WVU (15-8, 6-6 Big 12) led 18-15 after the first quarter. Iowa State jumped ahead 19-18 after a layup and a jumper. The Mountaineers first points of the second quarter came from junior Kylee Blacksten’s three pointer. Blacksten finished with six points. Iowa State outscored WVU 20-16 in the second quarter. The Cyclones took a 35-34 lead into the half. ISU finished the quarter on a 6-0 run.
WVU took an 8 point lead going into the fourth quarter. Danni Nichols hit a three pointer right before the buzzer giving the Mountaineers a 56-48 lead going into the fourth. WVU converted 13 free throw points throughout the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers outscored the Cyclones 17-12 in the final frame to win by 13 points.
Quinerly led all scorers with 20 points. Kyah Watson had finished with eleven. The Mountaineers are home to host the Kansas Jayhawks Wednesday night Feb. 15.
