WVU whips Penn State at home!

MORGANTOWN, WV—In case you haven’t been paying attention, the West Virginia Mountaineer baseball team is the real thing these days. WVU (30-11) whipped visiting Penn State 14-2 Tuesday night before 3,500 boisterous fans. The 18th nationally ranked Mountaineers hit two grand slams and the offense combined for 13 hits and three home runs.

West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt hit a grand slam in the third inning which put the Mountaineers in front early 4-0..Penn State managed a run in the top of the fourth off back to back hits and an rbi double from Grant Norris.

WVU’s Offense really came alive in the bottom of the fourth led by Grant Hussey. Hussey singled to start the inning. Eventually the bases were loaded again for Wethereholt. He responded with a long sacrifice fly putting WVU ahead 5-1. Wetherholt finished his night going 2 for 3 with 5 rbi and two runs scored. Hussey hit a 415 ft grand slam to give WVU a 12-1 lead.

GAME NOTES: WVU is now 30-11 and 8-4 in the Big 12 good enough for first place. WVU was picked to be last in the preseason. WVU is going on the road to Waco for a three game set against the Baylor Bears. Baylor is last in the Big 12 at 6-12.

Before losing to WVU Tuesday night, Penn State had just swept a three game series from Ohio State. PSU is now 23-14.
