Polls are great. They give fans something to talk about. It gives the teams included in them recognition. That said, they are deeply flawed. A big part of that is the human emotion that is involved in voting in polls.

Well, the RPI is strictly based on numbers. Not last season’s numbers. This season’s numbers. And according to their calculations, West Virginia has been the best team in the country so far this season.

Check out the RPI top 5, per CBS Sports:

The RPI isn’t the only power index that thinks highly of the Mountaineers. The NET rankings are the NCAA’s official metric for seeding the tournament. In the latest release of the NET rankings, the Mountaineers check in at No. 9. Kanas is No. 4 and the top 10 includes two teams the Mountaineers defeated: No. 2 Ohio State and No. 10 Wichita State.

It’s still early, but it’s amazing what this Mountaineer team has been able to accomplish before 2020. With conference play coming, West Virginia has come out of nowhere to now being projected as one of the top teams in the conference.

A big part of this team’s success has been the emergence of freshman guard Miles McBride. Coming into the season Mountaineer fans expected big things from freshman Oscar Tshiebwe. While “Big O” is certainly doing his thing, Miles McBride has forced his way into crunch time minutes by doing it on both ends of the court.

More Stories on WVU Basketball:

After last season Bob Huggins vowed to get this team back to where they should be. So far in the 2019-2020 campaign, Huggins has more than kept his word to Mountaineer fans.

The next test for the Mountaineers happens to be on the road against the No. 2 team in the RPI. WVU comes in on a four-game winning streak. Kansas comes in winning their last game at Stanford.
