WVU beats Conference USA Preseason Favorite

MORGANTOWN, WV—–The West Virginia Mountaineers kept their home winning streak perfect with an 81-70 victory over University of Alabama-Birmingham Saturday night. Kedrian Johnson scored 17 points while Emmit Matthews Jr. added 16 with 4-three pointers and nine rebounds. Joe Toussaint had 14 points and three steals. Tre Mitchell had 13 points, 7 rebounds and five assists.     

UAB took a brief 47-45 lead with 14:33 left in the second half but never led again. WV led 40-31 at the half. The Mountaineers only outscored the Blazers by two points in the second half (41-39). The loss halted the Blazer win streak at six games.

UAB was the pre-season favorite in Conference USA. This was their first road game.    The loss left UAB with a 7-2 record while the Mountaineers improved to 8-2. UAB returns home to face South Carolina Wednesday. WVU stays home to face Buffalo December 18.

Attendance was 12,182 for the Mountaineer home game vs. UAB.
