West Virginia Women Whip Houston

MORGANTOWN, WV—-The WVU Women’s basketball team held the Houston Cougar basketball team scoreless in the entire first quarter Wednesday night en route to a big 80-39 win at the Coliseum. It’s the first time in WVU women’s basketball history that the Mountaineers held a team scoreless in a quarter. The last time they came close to that feat was limiting TCU to just one point in the opening quarter of a contest back on January 25, 2022.

The Mountaineers (15-2, 4-2 Big 12) came out scoring the first 19 points of the game. WVU forced 7 turnovers in the first quarter and held the Cougars scoreless for the opening 10:54 of action.

WVU led 35-8 at the half with a solid defensive effort. WVU extended its lead to as many as 43 points in the fourth frame. The Mountaineers were led again by Junior Guard JJ Quinerly with 18 points. It was the eleventh time this season  she has led WVU’s scoring and her 16th time in double figures.

Senior Lauren Fields got her first double-double of the season with ten points and ten rebounds. Senior Kylee Blacksten and sophomore guard Jordan Harrison also finished in double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Defensively WVU forced 22 turnovers marking the 20-plus for the 16th time this season. WVU tallied 13 steals  for the second straight contest. The Mountaineers shot 52 percent (29 of 55) from the floor and held Houston to 27.9 percent  (17 of 61). WVU limited Houston to one three pointer.

Next, WVU takes on Cincinnati Saturday Jan, 20 at 4 p.m. at Cincinnati ‘s Fifth Thirds arena.
