New WVU Basketball Coach Kellogg Gets First Win

MORGANTOWN,WV—The West Virginia Women’s basketball team gave new head coach Mark Kellogg his first win as a Mountaineer 74-39 over Loyola Maryland Tuesday night inside the Coliseum.

The Mountaineers led by as many as 37 points and only trailed for 40 seconds in the game. WVU held a slim lead of 18-16 at the end of the first quarter but took control on a 17-2 run in the second quarter and never looked back.

Junior guard JJ Quinerly led all scorers in the contest with 19 points, hitting a career best 4, three pointers. Two newcomers, sophomore guard Jordan Harrison and fifth year senior Lauren Fields collected 18 and 13 points. 

The Mountaineers dominated in the rebounding department 35-22. Junior guard Kyah Watson led WVU with six. All nine Mountaineer players who saw action finished the game with at least two.

The Mountaineers shot 52.2 percent from beyond the arc. It marked the first time a team had done so since Feb. 5, 2022 vs. Oklahoma. WVU had its best offensive quarter in the third quarter shooting 66.7 percent from the floor and 80 percent from three point range. West Virginia outscored Loyola 15-9 in the final quarter. The win marks the 10th straight season the Mountaineers have been victorious on opening night. It’s also the 22nd straight non-conference regular season home win.

The Mountaineer women go on the road to Pitt in the “Backyard Brawl” Saturday November 11 inside the Peterson Events Center in Pittsburgh. The Panthers and Mountaineers tip off at 2 p.m.
