Mountaineer Women Keep the Winning Streak Alive
MORGANTOWN, WV—-“Momentum” can best describe the West Virginia Mountaineer Women’s basketball team as they continue to win with a 68-53 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats (8-5) at the Coliseum Wednesday night. Kyah Watson scored 14 points and Jordan Harrison added 13 for the No. 24 ranked Mountaineers. JJ Quinerly and Lauren Fields each scored 12 points. Quinerly’s 12 points mark the 40th time in her career she had notched double figures in a contest.
The Mountaineers (13-0, 2-0 Big 12) are off to its second best start in program history. The Mountaineers matched the other 13-0 start in 2017-18 before finishing 25-12.
WVU’s defense made 12 steals early in the game forcing 17 turnovers in the first half. WVU allowed only 7 points in the first quarter. The Mountaineers had a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers in the game.
Jayla Hemingway had back to back 3’s to open the second quarter improving the WVU lead to 20-7. The Mountaineers hit on five three’s in the second quarter as Fields and Harrison contributed. Cincinnati outscored WVU 17-13 in the final quarter. With the victory the Mountaineers are now 5-3 in games played in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers will get another big test on Saturday when number 10 Texas arrives Saturday January 6. The game is set for 2 p.m. It will be broadcast on ESPN+ . Also on the radio at 100.9 WZST-FM.
