Mountaineer Women End No.22 Oklahoma’s 9 Game Winning Streak

MORGANTOWN, WV—-Cue Country  Roads! The No.24 West Virginia Mountaineers (22-3,11-3 Big 12) snapped the No.22 Oklahoma Sooners win streak at 9 with a “never give-up” 70-66 victory Saturday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.

The Mountaineers won the game despite almost losing a seven point lead in the final 30 seconds and missing two free throws with 6.5 seconds left. After Jordan Harrison made 1 of 2 free throws with 28.5 seconds left for a 68-61 lead, (WVU’s largest lead of the game), OU’s Nevaeh Tot quickly made a layup and then a turnover became a 3 pointer with 7.6 seconds to go.

The Sooners fouled Tavy Diggs at 6.5 seconds and the 65 percent free throw shooter missed both! Tot was fouled on the drive with a second left. Tot, a 75 percent foul shooter, missed the first and had a lane violation on the second. Harrison made both foul shots with.3 to go to end the close game.

JJ Quinerly scored 18 points, Diggs had 12, Kyah Watson had 11 points and nine rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Harrison passed 300 career assists. Peyton Verhulst had 20 points to lead Oklahoma (18-7,12-2 Big 12). The Sooners had won six straight at the WVU Coliseum before losing today.

The WVU defense has forced at least 20 turnovers in all but two games this season and OU, which hadn’t had 20 giveaways in 13 games, had 25, which led to 23 points. WVU had only 9 turnovers.

The Mountaineers have a tough schedule ahead. WVU travels to No. 7 Kansas State on Wednesday and is back home against No.21 Baylor next Saturday looking to avenge a loss to the Bears recently in Waco.
