Mountaineer Women Drop Away Game in Iowa

AMES, Iowa—Senior forward Kylee Blacksten’s season high 16 points wasn’t enough as the Iowa Cyclones beat the No. 24 visiting WVU Mountaineers 74-64 Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers (12-2, 2-2 Big 12) led for 33 minutes of the game but a poor second half hampered their effort to pull out a victory.

Fifth year senior, Lauren Fields added 13 points while junior guard JJ Quinerly finished with 10 points and six assists. Fields and Quinerly had five rebounds. The Mountaineers led at the half 44-31, hitting nine 3’s while the Cyclones were 0-7 from beyond the arc. WVU extended its lead to 19 points, 55-36, over the opening four minutes of the third quarter, then the Cyclones held the Mountaineers scoreless the remainder of the third quarter. WVU still had an 8 point lead at the end of the third frame. Iowa State took control in the fourth quarter outscoring WVU 27-9 for the come-from-behind victory.

WVU shot 34.8 percent (24 of 69) from the floor and connected on just 12 of 43 from beyond the arc.

With the loss WVU is now 13-12 all time versus Iowa State. They are 7-5 in games played in Ames. WVU has not won inside the Hilton Coliseum since the 2017-18 season.

WVU closes out its two game road trip with a stop at UCF on Saturday at noon, ET. The Mountaineers will try to snap a rare two game losing streak.
