Breaking WVU Basketball News

MORGANTOWN, WV—According to reports the West Virginia Mountaineer Basketball team will play the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2023. The game is slated for December at a neutral site in Ohio. The actual date has not been set as of Thursday. The last time the two teams battled was December 29, 2019. The 24th ranked Mountaineers won the game 67-59. Ohio State was ranked 19th.

In other big basketball news the Backyard Brawl was announced today for December 6. The Pitt Panthers will travel to Morgantown. The Panthers will try to break a six game losing streak to WVU. It will be the 190th meeting between the two rival schools. The contest will mark the first time since 2012 that Pitt and West Virginia will meet after reaching the NCAA Tournament the previous season.

The Backyard Brawl is the most played series in Pitt program history dating back to 1906.WVU won 81-56 last season in Pittsburgh. The Mountaineer roster will feature four players recruited from the NCAA transfer portal. WVU will have former Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, who averaged a double double last season for the Orange. He had 14.5 points and 10.3 rebounds a game.

Also joining WVU this offseason are Kerr Kriisa, a guard who averaged 9.9 points and 5.5assists per game for Arizona, and former Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, who averaged 18.9 and 10.9 points during the 2021-2022 season.

The Panthers haven’t defeated WVU since 2012 when both teams were members of the big East. The Mountaineers hold a commanding 101-88 advantage in the series but Pitt has won five in a row once and four consecutive twice dating back to 2002.
