Big 12 Tournament Begins: What’s next for the Big 12 champions?

MORGANTOWN, WV– The late Yankee Hall of Fame baseball player, Yogi Berra once said “It ain’t over until it’s over!” That famous quote is certainly true for the WVU baseball team. Despite the three game late season losses at Texas this past weekend the Mountaineers will have a chance to redeem themselves as postseason play gets underway. WVU finished the regular season 39-16 and 15-9 in the conference and a share of the Big 12 Conference Title!

Actually the Mountaineers had the most wins (39) than any other Big 12 team.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 tournament will get underway in Arlington, Texas Wednesday May 24. West Virginia will enter the tournament as a three seed. If the Mountaineers would have won at Texas they very well would have been a number one seed.

Nevertheless , No.3 WVU will face No. 6 Texas Tech at 8:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+. If WVU wins they will face the game 3 winner at 8:30 p.m. Thursday facing either Oklahoma State or Oklahoma.

Here is a chart of the tournament seeding:

1. Texas 38-18, 15-9 Big 12

2. Oklahoma State 37-16, 15-9 Big 12

3. West Virginia 39-16, 15-9 Big 12

4. TCU 33-22, 13-11 Big 12

5. Kansas State 33-22, 13-11 Big 12

6. Texas Tech 37-19, 12-12 Big 12

7.Oklahoma 30-24, 11-13 Big 12

8. Kansas 24-20, 8-16 Big 12

Hopefully the Mountaineers will put the three Texas losses behind them and start with a fresh mental attitude in the tournament and post season. As Yogi Berra also said, 90 percent of the game is mental. The Mountaineers have already proved they have a great team. They are certainly capable of winning the Big 12 tournament. Let’s go Mountaineers!
